Beta hCG Blood Test

Our private Beta hCG blood test measures the specific level of pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) within the blood which can be detected in early pregnancy from approximately 4-5 weeks gestation, (the blood test can be done from the first day of a missed period).  Beta-hCG is often used as a marker to confirm pregnancy and monitor its progress. This test can also detect a pregnancy earlier than at home pregnancy tests and increased levels could suggest a multiple pregnancy.

hCG is a hormone produced in the cells of the placenta, soon after the fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining. Your hCG levels rise very quickly in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, doubling every 48 hours if both mum and baby are healthy and developing well. This test can confirm your pregnancy and check your pregnancy is progressing providing essential reassurance.  

This test is available as a single test to get an exact hCG number when home pregnancy tests are unclear, or it is perfect for women who want to have repeat HCG tests (x2 blood test 48 hours apart) to monitor their pregnancy and ensure their pregnancy continues to progress in the early stages.

How does the test work?

A small blood sample is taken from the arm by our trained phlebotomist during your appointment. Your sample is then sent to our accredited laboratory partner (TDL) for analysis.

Results are typically available within 24-48 hours from laboratory processing and results are emailed directly to you. Please ensure you are fully hydrated drinking 1 litre of water 1 hour prior to your appointment.

Important Information

The timing of Progesterone blood testing is very important, often performed 7 days BEFORE the expected start of your next period (commonly known as a “day 21 progesterone test” in a regular 28 day menstrual cycle). With a progesterone level of >30nmol/L, seven days prior to an anticipated period is a positive indicator of ovulation, and decreased levels of progesterone can indicate challenges in conception after 12 months of attempting to conceive. If early pregnant, then blood test taken 4-6 weeks for early pregnancy monitoring, history of miscarriage or if you have symptoms of bleeding.

How does the test work?

At Tiny Vision, we aim to make every appointment calm and welcoming. Progesterone Blood Test appointments will be approximately 10 minutes.

During your blood test appointment, a fully trained phlebotomist will draw a blood sample for you. The process will reflect the following steps:

  • Our professional phlebotomist will uncover your left or right arm.
  • A tourniquet will be placed on your upper arm. This is used to help swell your veins, making it easier to place a needle.
  • Once successfully fitted, a sample of blood will be drawn into tubes.
  • Once completed, the needle and tourniquet will be removed and a plaster placed on the open wound. This can be removed after a couple of hours.

Following the blood draw, blood samples are sent to our accredited, authorised laboratory partner, TDL for analysis. 

What is a normal progesterone level?

It depends on timing. After ovulation (mid-luteal phase): above 30 nmol/L confirms ovulation, above 40 nmol/L is ideal. In early pregnancy: levels should be rising: below 20 nmol/L may indicate problems. Share your specific result with your GP for tailored explanation.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

From 10 weeks | £400

This non-invasive prenatal test known as the “NIPT” (blood test) is an advanced prenatal screening test that assesses the likelihood of certain chromosomal conditions in a developing baby using a simple maternal blood sample from the mother’s arm.

The test analyses small fragments of your baby’s cell-free DNA (cfDNA) present in maternal plasma (bloodstream) that have been released from both maternal and placental cells. It can provide highly accurate screening for certain chromosomal conditions:

(Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18), Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13) from as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy. This test can be requested for any singleton or twin pregnancy, including those conceived naturally or by IVF using the patient’s own egg or a donor egg.

NIPT requires a single blood draw, which poses no threat to the fetus, and can be done from 10 weeks’ gestation. By analysing the proportions of DNA fragments derived from different chromosomes or chromosome regions, NIPT can screen for the presence or absence of specific chromosome disorders.

NIPT is more accurate (>99% sensitivity) than the combined first trimester maternal serum screening and ultrasound (82% sensitivity) in identifying pregnancies with or without these disorders as the NIPT provides fewer false-positive and false-negative results than combined first trimester screening for trisomy 21, 18 and 13 (the current 12 week NHS screening test + scan).

Once the fetal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been analysed the results are provided from receipt of the sample in our accredited London laboratory within a few days using out partnered lab, The Drs Laboratory

Important Information

NIPT is not a diagnostic test – it is a screening test and does not provide a definitive genetic diagnosis as NIPT cannot differentiate potential chromosome differences between the placenta and the fetus. If a high-risk result is identified, further testing may be recommended on guidance from your medical provider. Your Midwife will discuss either a CVS or Amniocentesis, however this is entirely your decision, and some parents decide to do nothing.

NIPT does not screen for non-chromosome disorders, familial mutations, malformations, fetal growth or fetal viability. NIPT does not provide information on mosaicism, partial trisomies or translocations, or other rare chromosomal abnormalities. If the ultrasound scan shows a high nuchal translucency or other major physical defects such as brain abnormalities, heart abnormalities, the risk for some rare chromosomal defects may be high. In such cases, the mother may choose to have a CVS or an amniocentesis.

The non-invasive prenatal test does not provide information on other physical defects such as spina bifida, or information on fetal growth. It is therefore advisable that the mother has all the usual ultrasound scans during her pregnancy.

In addition, NIPT can assess fetal sex. This is optional (no additional cost). Please note that, in twin pregnancies, sex chromosome (X and Y) analysis can determine fetal sex but not sex chromosome conditions. This test is not suitable in the case of a vanishing twin. The sex of twins will be reported as one result. If male, one or both of the twins will be male. If female, both twins will be female.

How does the test work?

  • Prior to the blood test, one of our qualified and experienced sonographers will perform an ultrasound scan. During this scan the sonographer will check and show you your baby’s heartbeat. The Sonographer will also need to check you are at the correct gestation (over 10 weeks). Unfortunately, if you are not over 10 weeks we will be unable to perform the test because there is only enough fetal cfDNA after 10 weeks to get accurate results.
  • Our professional phlebotomist will uncover your left or right arm.
  • A tourniquet will be placed on your upper arm. This is used to help swell your veins, making it easier to place a needle.
  • Once successfully fitted, a sample of blood will be drawn into tubes.
  • Once completed, the needle and tourniquet will be removed and a plaster placed on the open wound. This can be removed after a couple of hours.
  • Following the blood draw, blood samples are sent to our accredited, authorised laboratory partner, TDL for analysis and results will be available between 3-5 days.
